Anti-Job, Pro-Freedom Quote Of The Week 65

Comment:
A friend pointed out the further abuse of women in calling the Roman Catholic Church “she.” Mother church! I think with a century’s update, Mark Twain may have revised his emphasis on “men.” That a group of greed-based violent males, with their slaves, overran goddess-based agricultural Europe, set up and ran an institution of power and dominance to slaughter (millions of women), torture, make slaves of and bore people, not permitting the ordination of women, called their institution “she” and “mother” is perhaps the black irony of doublespeak through the centuries—
--Jack S.

There you see the hand of that awful power, the Roman Catholic Church. In two or three little centuries it had converted a nation of men [sic] to a nation of worms. Before the day of the Church's supremacy in the world, men [sic] were men, and held their heads up, and had a man's pride and spirit and independence; and what of greatness and position a person got, he [sic] got mainly by achievement, not by birth. But then the Church came to the front, with an axe to grind; and she [sic] was wise, subtle, and knew more than one way to skin a cat -- or a nation; she invented "divine right of kings," and propped it all around, brick by brick, with the Beatitudes -- wrenching them from their good purpose to make them fortify an evil one; she preached (to the commoner) humility, obedience to superiors, the beauty of self-sacrifice; she [sic] preached (to the commoner) meekness under insult; preached (still to the commoner, always to the commoner) patience, meanness of spirit, non-resistance under oppression; and she [sic] introduced heritable ranks and aristocracies, and taught all the Christian populations of the earth to bow down to them and worship them. Even down to my birth-century that poison was still in the blood of Christendom, and the best of English commoners was still content to see his inferiors impudently continuing to hold a number of positions, such as lordships and the throne, to which the grotesque laws of his country did not allow him to aspire; in fact, he was not merely contented with this strange condition of things, he was even able to persuade himself that he was proud of it. It seems to show that there isn't anything you can't stand, if you are only born and bred to it.

Anti-Job, Pro-Freedom Quote Of The Week 64

We are turning into a nation--and possibly a world--of scared, personality-less puritans who live small lives, the perameters of which are dictated by unexamined fears, idiot suspicions and external authorities whose right to control us we no longer have the brains to question. And every time I go to a training course I confront the reality of this in a little greater detail. Sitting there--as near to the back as one can get in a convivial discussion circle--I feel a kind of nausea about the dreadful failure of the human race to live up to its colossal potential: we have minds capable of spanning universes in a micro-second, and yet we are racing blindly into a future defined by cowardly obedience and puritanism. Every time I learn again about not sharing my workplace problems with my lover because of Data Protection or The Correct 20-Second Hand-Washing Method, I think of my other life as a poet and (in Ginsberg's words) "an unofficial bastard of nature" and wonder what in god's name I'm doing there. And then I remember. Money.

Anti-Job, Pro-Freedom Quote Of The Week 63

In no sense are the wars and revolutions of modern times examples of what happens when civilized repression is removed. They are the outbursts of sadistic rage for which the civilization of repression must always provide. They are its price.

But technological civilization can no longer afford the price, for the same reason as Marcuse argues: it does not need to pay it. For the technology which makes these outbursts insanely destructive also makes the culture of repression unnecessary because in principle it abolishes the need for drudgery and labor. Yet technology is not permitted to abolish labor, because, of all things, hard work has become a virtue instead of the curse which it was always advertised to be by our remote ancestors.

"Our children should be prepared to bring their children up so they won't have to work as neurotic necessity. The necessity to work is a neurotic symptom. It is a crutch. It is an attempt to make oneself feel valuable even though there is no particular need for one's working." (Marcuse)

When technology is used, quite absurdly, to increase employment rather than get rid of it, work becomes busy-work, an artificial creation of every-more meaningless routines. An interminable production of things that are not so much luxuries for physical gratification as pretentious trash. Technology then works against Eros, and as a result labor is all the more alienated, and the necessity for violent outbursts increased.
